Your Winter Skin Edit

Your esthetician – approved guide to protecting the barrier, correcting dehydration and keeping your skin happy all season long!

Every esthetician knows that cold months typically accompany naturally lower humidity, continuously running heating systems and, for some, forgetting to drink water consistently throughout the day, as well as indulging in long, HOT showers.

Winter weather skin concerns + challenges are NO JOKE! The most common concerns include skin dryness, tightness, irritation, redness, peeling and breakouts. A disrupted skin barrier is the ultimate culprit for all of our winter-related skin issues. Let’s look at what you can do both at home and at FACE FOUNDRIÉ!

The first step is to heal the skin barrier. Let’s geek out for minute and learn what the skin barrier actually DOES! The Skin Barrier is divinely designed to protect the skin ( skin is the largest organ in the body) It is made up of natural oils, lipids, and skin cells. If the skin barrier’s primary function is to protect and keep things OUT, imagine for a moment the challenge skin care products have to actually penetrate this BARRIER (this is why not all skincare products are effective – but that is an entirely different blog post!) Simultaneously, the skin barrier fights trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) which is a fancy phrase for dehydration! So to recap – your skin barrier keeps things out and keeps hydration in so when the barrier is compromised imagine the domino effect of adverse symptoms including dryness, breakouts and redness!

Winter skin isn’t “mysteriously dry.” It’s predictably stressed.

Cold temps, low humidity, indoor heat, and over-cleansing all compromise the skin barrier—leading to dehydration, sensitivity, dullness, and flare-ups that mimic multiple skin conditions at once. The fix isn’t more products; it’s smarter formulation and seasonal adjustments.

In this Winter Skin Edit, we’re breaking down:
    •    why skin behaves differently in cold weather
    •    how to support the barrier without overloading it
    •    and the professional tweaks aestheticians actually recommend for winter balance

Because glowing skin in winter isn’t accidental—it’s edited

What Winter Does to the Skin Barrier

In winter, the skin barrier takes the biggest hit.

Cold air holds less moisture, indoor heating accelerates transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and wind exposure weakens lipid integrity. The result? Skin that looks dry but is actually dehydrated, inflamed, and barrier-compromised.

When the barrier is disrupted, skin becomes:
    •    more reactive
    •    less able to retain hydration
    •    slower to heal ( one of the biggest indicators of a weak skin barrier are acne lesions taking longer than usual to heal)
    •    prone to dullness and uneven tone

Barrier support isn’t optional in winter—it’s foundational.

Dehydrated vs. Dry: Winter’s Most Common Mix-Up

This is where winter skincare often goes wrong.

Dry skin = a lack of oil
Dehydrated skin = a lack of water

In winter, most skin types experience dehydration, even oily and acne-prone skin. Over-stripping, skipping hydration layers, or aggressively exfoliating only worsens the issue. Oily skin needs hydration – we love Face Reality Cran Peptide Cream in the winter for acnegenic skin

Signs you’re dealing with dehydration:
    •    tightness after cleansing
    •    makeup sitting poorly
    •    sudden sensitivity
    •    fine lines appearing “out of nowhere”

Winter skin doesn’t need heavier everything—it needs balanced hydration plus barrier support.

Ingredient Swaps That Matter in Cold Weather

Seasonal shifts call for formulation edits, not full routine overhauls.

Focus on:
    •    Humectants (to bind water): glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol
    •    Barrier lipids: ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids
    •    Soothing agents: niacinamide (lower %), allantoin, oat, aloe

A couple products to grab at your next appointment that contain the above:

FACE FOUNDRIÉ Blue Stuff + MOTHERLINE Healing Balm

Use caution with:
    •    high-percentage exfoliating acids: gentle formulations like Circadia Serum 71 are a great choice
    •    aggressive retinoid frequency – cut back to 2 – 3x a week and consider grabbing a more gentle formulation like Circadia Revita- Cyte or PCA Resurfacing Serum
    •    foaming or overly clarifying cleansers – opt instead for a gentle cleanser like LAVISH Gentle Oil Cleanser

Winter is about supporting the skin, not challenging it.

Professional Winter Skin Non-Negotiables

These are the aesthetician rules we don’t break when temps drop:
    1.    Cleanse gently
If skin feels tight after cleansing, it’s too much—period. Squeaky clean is for dishes not your face!
    2.    Hydrate before you treat
Active ingredients perform better on hydrated skin ( this includes your in service chemical peels and Microchanneling x Procell) – daily leave your essence or toner on the skin and then apply your serum while it is still damp.
    3.    Seal strategically
A lightweight moisturizer applied to damp skin goes further than piling on thick layers that are too occlusive and can cause breakouts. We love Face Reality Moisturizers if breakouts are a concern!
    4.    SPF stays
UV exposure doesn’t disappear in winter—especially with reflective snow and cloud cover. We have multiple formulas of EltaMD SPF to cover a variety of skin concerns! See our handy SPF guide in store to know which formula you will LOVE and WANT to apply daily!

How to Edit Your Routine (Not Replace It)

Winter skincare works best when it’s intentional and minimal.

A winter-approved routine edit:
    1.    Gentle cleanse
    2.    Hydrating serum
    3.    Barrier-supporting moisturizer
    4.    SPF (AM)

At night, focus on repair—not correction. This is the season to prioritize recovery over results.

The ELTA MD Skin Recovery System is a FANTASTIC Winter Skin Edit if you prefer a paint x numbers approach that has everything including your Cleanser, Liquid Essence, Lipid Barrier Serum and Overnight Recovery Mask/Moisture.

As far as your monthly FACE FOUNDRIÉ service:

Focus on booking an Enzyme Mask or Chemical Peel to keep your cells churning + a Hydrating Bioeffect Mask with your Focused or Next Level Facial! Your estheticians will ensure your monthly service enhances what is going on daily and boosts your results by keeping your cells fresh and exfoliated!

Monthly Chemical Peels are phenomenal for so many different reasons but primarily to keep skin cells fresh and acne clear.

The Takeaway

Winter skin isn’t broken—it’s responding to its environment.

When you understand what cold weather does to the barrier, hydration levels, and inflammation pathways, the solution becomes simple: edit, don’t overwhelm.

Thoughtful adjustments. Smart formulations. Skin that stays balanced—no matter the temperature.
